About TV Tuners (Also Known as Receivers, Set top Boxes (STB) or De-Modulators)

A TV tuner allows one to receive signals on one’s television and get different channels. It converts signals into pictures and sounds. The oldest type of TV tuner was simply the dial type used in order to change channels. Sometimes in order to get certain cable channels or HDTV digital cable, one needs a special external box purchased or borrowed from a cable company.

This simple type of TV tuner is available in most TVs, or through most cable companies. However, many now refer to the external TV tuner that allows one to receive television programming on a monitor screen. Essentially, the external TV tuner can convert a simple monitor to a television, and depending upon cable service, may allow one to watch a wide number of television stations.

Many use a TV tuner to watch free off air television on their monitor without using a cable service. Some countries broadcast programs for free. As well, some stations broadcast without encrypting (also called "Clear") information.

Analog TV tuners are known as NTSC (America, Canada) tuners and are used to receive analog Cable programs only.

Digital TV tuners have 2 types:
• ATSC - for terrestrial, over the air, free un-encrypted broadcasts.
• QAM (Clear) - For unencrypted Cable service in Standard Definition (SD) or High Definition (HD, HDTV), also known as HDTV Cable Box.
